Extracurricular Activities
Victus Academy provides a well-rounded extracurricular experience for its students. We do this in a collaborative fashion with the students to ensure all are engaged in the process and to develop their character outside of the classroom and the rink. We offer many extracurricular activities, most notably through student council, math enrichment/coding club, newspaper club (The Monthly Score), and outdoor games club.
We also recognize that students will need some time to relax and have fun with their classmates, to make the most of their time together at Victus. We provide a recreational space for students to engage with their classmates outside of their classes, offering fun activities such as our RapidShot shooting system, SuperDeker stickhandling machine, and ping-pong tables!
Community Involvement
It is also important for our student-athletes to demonstrate leadership opportunities in the community. To that end, our student body participates in several fundraisers throughout the year. We collect pledges for our annual “Terry Fox Skates” and charity hockey games against the Waterloo Region Police Service (WRPS) and collect donations for the Food Drive and Toasty Toes. We have also participated in equipment drives for Kitchener Minor Hockey and a small community in Nunavut and cleaned up around the rink for Earth Day.
Guidance and Extra Help
Victus Academy works closely with its students to ensure their goals are achieved. Students receive the individual attention, guidance and advice they require to allow them to carefully chart out their future path, both academically and athletically. This will include advice and direction regarding universities and colleges from an academic standpoint to the OHL, NCAA and USports from an athletic standpoint and ensuring all eligibility requirements are met. Victus provides SAT preparation for all of our Grade 10-12 students to keep the door open to entering a US college.
Our Director of Student-Athlete Development Todd Hoffman also assists in the promotion of players and assists our students/families in finding the team that is the right fit to play on.
Immediately after school each day, all teachers at Victus Academy are available for “homework club” where students have the opportunity to evaluate where they need help with their course work and allows them the opportunity to ask questions and receive additional assistance.
Guest Speakers
Victus Academy brings in guest speakers periodically to educate student-athletes on a variety of topics of interest. Guests include Murray Hiebert (former GM of the Kitchener Rangers), Lauren Fulop (Nutrition consultant for the Kitchener Rangers), Dr. Joel Dixon (concussion management), Mike Hoffman (NHL player), Garrett McFadden (former Guelph Storm captain & founder of McFadden’s Movement) for mental health discussion, Ben Fanelli (former Kitchener Rangers captain & founder of Heroic Minds) on how to overcome adversity, and Darren Stevenson (founder of 519 Sports Online) for interview skills. Each of these topics is important and the information that is presented is something that is relevant for our students and can be used for the rest of their lives.
