The Terry Fox Run becomes the Terry Fox Skate at Victus Academy

For Immediate Release
(Friday, September 24th, 2021)

On September 29th 2021, students from grades 5-12 at Victus Academy, a private school and hockey academy located at Sportsworld Arena in Kitchener will take part in their fifth annual Terry Fox Skate, a twist on the historical Terry Fox Run where students will skate instead of run in honour of Terry Fox.

The students will begin the event by watching a video on Terry Fox to better understand the purpose of the skate and learn more about Terry Fox’s journey during his marathon of Hope. Students will then lace up their skates and hit the ice with their classmates over several sessions, beginning at 8:50. They will skate 55 laps, equivalent to 5km and it is expected these student-athletes will take approximately 30 minutes to complete the challenge.

Last year’s event raised $3,761 and students are hoping to surpass this amount this year, setting a goal of $4,000. All donations go directly to the Terry Fox Foundation which continues to fund cancer research across Canada, in hopes of one day achieving Terry’s dream of a world without cancer

When discussing the importance of the event, Teacher Leon Ranger explained “The Terry Fox Skate is one the annual events here at Victus that our students and staff really look forward to every year. Raising money for the fight against cancer is so important, and we are lucky to have had some very generous donations over the years, as our students have done such a great job fundraising. The Terry Fox Skate is a great opportunity for our students to experience the joy of raising money for a great cause and to become involved with their local communities.”

The Terry Fox Foundation is one of the many charities that Victus Academy has continued to support over the years along with Toasty Toes and the Food Bank of Waterloo.
