“Terry Fox Skate” Victus Academy’s Twist On The Terry Fox Run

For Immediate Release
(Friday, September 25, 2020)

On Thursday October 1st, students from grades 5-12 at Victus Academy, a private school and hockey academy located at Sportsworld Arena in Kitchener will take part in their fourth annual Terry Fox Skate, where they will skate instead of run in honour of Terry Fox.

Starting the day off with students watching a video on Terry Fox to hear and learn more about his journey on the Marathon of Hope, students will then lace up their skates and be on the ice with their cohorts in sessions starting at 8:50 to skate 55 laps around the rink or 5km. It is expected that these student-athletes will finish in approximately 30 minutes.

The students are hoping to raise $2000 for the Terry Fox Foundation where funds go to the best researchers and facilities in the country to aid in cancer research and help achieve Terry Fox’s goal of living in a world without cancer.

Teacher Luke Poetker explains that “the students really try to embody the spirit of Terry Fox with them both being athletes and really try to relate with him but with their own twist on the ice.” Mr. Poetker also states that “you can really see on the ice the seriousness of it all for the students but with also the fun and competitiveness of skating.”

The Terry Fox Foundation is one of many other charities Victus Academy students support; Toasty Toes and the Food Bank of Waterloo also benefit from the student’s charitable work.

Victus Academy is a private school and hockey academy designed for dedicated male and female student athletes in grades 5-12.
