Victus Academy’s “Terry Fox Skate” – a unique twist on the Terry Fox Run

On September 23, 2022, students from grades 5-12 at Victus Academy, a private school and hockey academy located at Sportsworld Arena in Kitchener will take part in their sixth annual Terry Fox Skate, a twist on the historical Terry Fox Run where students will skate instead of run in honour of Terry Fox.

The students will begin the event by watching a video on Terry Fox to better understand the purpose of the skate and learn more about Terry Fox’s journey during his marathon of Hope. Students will then lace up their skates and hit the ice with their classmates over several sessions, beginning at 8:50. They will skate 55 laps, equivalent to 5km and it is expected these student-athletes will take approximately 30 minutes to complete the challenge.

Last year’s event raised around $5,700 and students are hoping to match this amount this year, continuing to set a goal of $5,000. All donations go directly to the Terry Fox Foundation which continues to fund cancer research across Canada, in hopes of one day achieving Terry’s dream of a world without cancer

When discussing the importance of the event, President Matthew Schmidt explained “The Terry Fox Skate is a unique way of celebrating Terry’s remarkable Marathon of Hope and is an event that our students and staff really enjoy. Continuing to raise money for cancer research is so important and we are so fortunate that our Victus student, staff, and parent body are able to contribute. This annual fundraiser provides a great opportunity for students to become involved with their local communities, which is an important trait Victus Academy wishes to instil.”

The Terry Fox Foundation is one of the many charities that Victus Academy has continued to support over the years along with Toasty Toes and the Food Bank of Waterloo.
