“Terry Fox Skate” : Victus Academy’s unique way of honouring Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope
For Immediate Release
(Wednesday, September 18, 2019)
On Thursday September 26, students from Grades 5-12 at Victus Academy, a private school / hockey academy located at Sportsworld Arena will honour Terry Fox in a unique way by lacing up their skates instead of shoes in their third annual “Terry Fox Skate.”
After a small opening assembly from 8:25am-8:40am, where students will hear about the Terry’s journey on the Marathon of Hope, students will then skate 55 laps of the rink or 5km. It is expected that this should take these student athletes approximately 30 minutes to complete.
The students are hoping to raise $2000 to go towards the Terry Fox Foundation, where donations raised go to fund innovative cancer research in order to achieve Terry’s goal of a world without cancer.
Principal Chuck Williams explains that “the student body came up with the idea of the Terry Fox Skate, a twist on the well-established Terry Fox Runs and it was a great success and something the entire student body bought into.” Mr. Williams also states the importance of producing strong, confident leaders outside of hockey: “Victus Academy is proud of its tradition of supporting community initiatives and ensuring that our students understand the importance of service to others.”
The Terry Fox Foundation is only one of the charities Victus Academy students’ support: Toasty Toes and the Food Bank of Waterloo Region also benefit from the students’ charitable work.
Victus Academy is a private school and hockey academy for male and female student athletes in grades 5-12 located in Kitchener.
